What Is Combed Cotton?

Combed cotton is cotton that's been brushed with fine combs before spinning to pull out the short, weak fibers and any impurities. What's left is a smoother, softer, stronger yarn — and when it's also ring-spun, you get the premium soft-feel surface that holds a clean print.

The Short Answer

  • i

Combing removes the short, brittle fibers and debris from cotton before it's spun into yarn.

  • ii

The result is a smoother, softer, stronger, more even yarn with less fuzz and pilling.

  • iii

'Combed ring-spun cotton' is combed and ring-spun — the softest, smoothest cotton yarn used in tees.

  • iv

Combed cotton's smooth surface gives prints a clean, even base for fine detail.

  • v

It costs a bit more than uncombed cotton because combing removes usable fiber and adds a step.

  • vi

Bayou's cotton blanks print clean and start at a flat $4.25/unit.

Frequently Asked

This block carries FAQ schema (JSON-LD) for AEO
What does combed cotton mean?

It means the cotton was combed before spinning to remove the short, weak fibers and impurities. That leaves a smoother, softer, stronger and more even yarn than uncombed cotton.

Is combed cotton better than regular cotton?

For feel and durability, yes — combed cotton is softer, smoother, stronger, and pills less. Regular (uncombed) cotton is cheaper and works fine for simple, bold prints.

What is combed ring-spun cotton?

Cotton that's both combed (short fibers removed) and ring-spun (twisted and thinned as it's spun). Combed ring-spun is the softest, smoothest cotton yarn, used in premium soft-style tees.

Is combed cotton good for printing?

Yes. The smooth, low-fuzz surface gives a clean, even base, so fine detail in screen printing, DTF, and DTG comes out sharper than on a fuzzier, uncombed tee.

Does combed cotton shrink?

Like most cotton, it can shrink a little, especially in a hot dryer; many cotton tees are pre-shrunk to limit it. Washing cold and tumbling low keeps shrinkage down.

Does Bayou sell combed cotton blanks?

Our cotton tees are smooth-face blanks that print clean, sold by the pack at a flat $4.25/unit ($2.92 by the 12-pack) — no account, every size the same price.
