What Is a Raglan Sleeve?

A raglan sleeve is a sleeve that extends in one piece all the way to the collar, joined by a diagonal seam running from the underarm to the collarbone instead of a seam at the shoulder. It gives a fuller range of arm movement and the two-tone look you see on baseball tees and raglan sweatshirts.

The Short Answer

  • i

A raglan sleeve attaches with a diagonal seam from underarm to collar — there's no seam sitting on top of the shoulder.

  • ii

A set-in sleeve, the more common kind, seams straight around the shoulder; raglan trades that for the diagonal seam.

  • iii

Raglan sleeves give a freer range of arm movement, which is why they're common on athletic and baseball tees.

  • iv

'Raglan tee' and 'baseball tee' usually mean the same thing — often with contrast-color sleeves.

  • v

The style is named after Lord Raglan; the one-piece diagonal seam is the defining feature.

  • vi

At Bayou, blank raglan tees and sweatshirts print clean and start at a flat $4.25/unit.

"No shoulder seam, a diagonal cut to the collar — that's the baseball-tee look."

Frequently Asked

This block carries FAQ schema (JSON-LD) for AEO
What is a raglan sleeve?

A raglan sleeve is a sleeve cut in one piece that reaches all the way to the collar, joined by a diagonal seam from the underarm to the collarbone. Because there's no seam on top of the shoulder, it allows a fuller range of arm movement.

What's the difference between raglan and set-in sleeves?

A set-in sleeve is sewn around the shoulder with a seam on top; a raglan sleeve runs diagonally to the collar with no shoulder seam. Raglan gives more arm movement and the two-tone baseball-tee look; set-in is the classic everyday tee.

Is a raglan tee the same as a baseball tee?

Usually, yes. A baseball tee is a raglan tee — most have contrast-colored sleeves and sometimes 3/4-length sleeves. Both names point to that diagonal raglan seam.

Are raglan shirts good for printing?

Yes. The chest panel is flat and prints like any tee; just keep large chest artwork clear of the diagonal sleeve seams so the design doesn't cross them.

Why is it called a raglan sleeve?

It's named after Lord Raglan, who is said to have worn a coat with this one-piece, diagonal-seam sleeve. The name stuck for any sleeve cut that way.

Does Bayou sell blank raglan tees?

Yes — short-sleeve and long-sleeve raglans, including contrast and two-tone styles, sold by the pack at a flat $4.25/unit ($2.92 by the 12-pack), no account, every size the same price.
