Fleece vs French Terry

Fleece and French terry are both knit fabrics, and the difference is the inside. Fleece is brushed into a soft, fuzzy pile, so it's warmer, heavier, and cozy. French terry leaves the inside as unbrushed loops, so it's lighter, smoother, and more breathable — closer to a midweight sweatshirt than a winter hoodie.

Fig. II — The Short Version

The Short Answer

  • i

Both start as knit fabric; the difference is how the inside — the back of the knit — is finished.

  • ii

Fleece is brushed into a soft, fuzzy pile inside, which makes it warmer, heavier, and cozier.

  • iii

French terry leaves the inside as unbrushed loops, which makes it lighter, smoother, and more breathable.

  • iv

Fleece is the classic cold-weather feel; French terry suits spring layers and a structured look.

  • v

French terry's flatter face can give crisper prints; fleece is plush but prints well too.

  • vi

Bayou's blank pullover fleece and sweatshirts start at a flat $4.25/unit.

"It's all about the inside: brushed pile runs warm, looped terry runs light."

Frequently Asked

This block carries FAQ schema (JSON-LD) for AEO
What's the difference between fleece and French terry?

It's the inside of the knit. Fleece is brushed into a soft, fuzzy pile, so it's warmer and heavier. French terry leaves the inside as unbrushed loops, so it's lighter, smoother, and more breathable.

Is French terry warmer than fleece?

No. Fleece is warmer — the brushed pile traps more heat, which is why it's the classic cold-weather hoodie. French terry is lighter and more breathable, better for spring or layering.

Which is better for hoodies?

It depends on the use. Fleece is best for cozy, cold-weather hoodies and sweatshirts; French terry is best for lighter, more structured layers and warmer weather. Both take prints well.

Is French terry good for printing?

Yes. Its flatter, smoother face can hold crisp prints with clean edges. Fleece prints well too, but its plusher surface is slightly more textured under the ink.

Does Bayou sell fleece or French terry blanks?

Mostly pullover fleece and crew sweatshirts, all print-ready and sold by the pack at a flat $4.25/unit ($2.92 by the 12-pack) — no account, every size the same price. Stock varies, so styles can sell through.
